Poinsettia Care

While we are no longer producing Poinsettias, their care does not change, no matter where you buy them.

The quality and longevity of your plant will be assured by observing the following care instructions:

Moderately bright light is best, but poinsettias will tolerate lower light conditions.

Moderate temperatures are ideal, 65 - 70 F daytime and 60 - 65 F nights. Avoid hot or cold drafts or excess heat from appliances, fireplaces or ventilating ducts. If you're comfortable, your plant should be comfortable as well.

Moderately moist soil is preferred. Water thoroughly when soil feels dry to the touch or if the plant feels light when picked up. Drain excess water from saucer or foil to prevent root rot and protect furniture.

After purchase the plant must be sleeved to protect it as it leaves the warmth of the garden center. Never expose the plant to cold temperatures, such as near an outside door. Once inside, carefully  remove the protective wrapping immediately.

Can you "summer over" your plant and get it to bloom in time for Christmas next year? Yes, but it's a touchy process. We would be happy to explain it to you, but trust us, it will be much easier if you just come back and see us next year.

Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are not toxic to humans or domestic animals. However, we still wouldn't eat them.
